چکیده

Grenander's pattern theory ooers a uniied approach to characterizing variability in complex systems. Automatic target recognition systems for forward-looking infrared sensors must be robust to three kinds of variability: 1) Geometric variability-Target appearances vary with their orientations and positions; 2) Image variability-Target appearances vary with their thermodynamic state, and natural backgrounds consist of widely varying textures; 3) Complexity/scene variability-The number of targets encountered will not be known in advance, and targets may enter or leave the scene at random times. Pattern theoretic algorithms based on jump-diiusion processes which accommodate variabilities (1) and (3) have been proposed. The diiusions account for (1) by estimating positions and orientations, and the jumps account for (3) by adding and removing hypothesized targets and changing target types. Here we extend that work to better accommodate (2) by summarizing the thermodynamic state of targets with a parsimonious set of variables which become nuisance parameters in the Grenander/Bayesian formulation.

Jump-di usion processes for the automated understanding of FLIR scenes

Pattern theory provides a uniied way to represent knowledge in complex systems. We take a pattern theoretic approach to recognizing and tracking ground-based targets in sequences of forward-looking infrared images acquired from an airborne platform. A rich set of transformations on objects represented by three-dimensional faceted models are formulated to accommodate the variability found in FLI...

Automated Methods for Estimating Baseflow from Streamflow Records in a Semi Arid Watershed

Understanding of the runoff generation processes is important in understanding the magnitude and dynamics ofgroundwater discharge. However, these processes continue to be difficult to quantify and conceptualize. In this study, two digital filter based separation modules, the Recursive filtering method (RDF) and a generalization of therecursive digital filter (GRDF) were1991–2002 in the Hableh Ro...

Translation and Hybridity in Scenes and Frames Semantics

The present study is a theoretical attempt to illustrate how Fillmore's Scenes and Frames Semantics (SFS) could be employed as a framework to portray the process of understanding and translating hybrid texts. It first reviews the origin of SFS; then it maps SFS onto Nida’s linguistic model of translation process and the Interpretive Theory of Translation; it examines in the next section, withi...

Implementation of jump-di usion algorithms for understanding FLIR scenes

Our pattern theoretic approach to the automated understanding of forward-looking infrared (FLIR) images brings the traditionally separate endeavors of detection, tracking, and recognition together into a uniied jump-diiusion process. New objects are detected and object types are recognized through discrete jump moves. Between jumps, the location and orientation of objects are estimated via cont...

L2 Teachers’ Representations of Classroom Management Events: Variations across Experience Levels

Knowledge representation, defined as the way individuals structure their knowledge and cognitive processing of events and the associated sense-making processes, is believed to influence teachers’ reasoning/thinking skills. While extensively researched in mainstream teacher education, this line of inquiry is essentially lacking in the L2 teacher education literature. To fill some of the void, th...
